How to make June Solstice magic

First things first: What is the June Solstice?

The June Solstice is the day of the year when the Sun reaches its highest or lowest point in the sky, depending on where you live. As it stretches to this extreme, the Sun appears to remain still for a couple of days (hence the term “solstice,” which literally means “Sun standing still”). Since ancient times, humans all over the globe have marked the June Solstice as a celebration of abundance and life in the Northern Hemisphere, and a time of turning inward and calling the light back in the Southern Hemisphere. In both cases, this is a moment to gather with loved ones, feast, celebrate, and perform rituals to align with the energies of the new season.

Why? Because the June Solstice represents a turning point.

What makes this day so potent

In the Northern Hemisphere, the June Solstice is the longest day of the year, with the most hours of daylight. In the Southern Hemisphere, it’s the darkest day of the year, with the fewest hours of daylight. It’s also the second quarter day of the calendar year, which builds upon the solar cycle that began six months earlier on the December Solstice (the darkest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, and the longest day in the Southern Hemisphere). By this point, you’ve had half a year to test out your annual intentions, which makes it the perfect time to take stock of what’s blooming in your life and celebrate your progress.

The June Solstice coincides with the beginning of Cancer season as well. In Cancer, the Sun re-centers us around our chosen family and the feelings that come with connection. The Cancerian Sun is nurturing. Life-giving. Protective. It expands our notion of family and rallies to make sure we are all cared for and considered interpersonally and systemically. (So it also makes sense that Pride is celebrated during this season.)

When this energy is combined with the power of the Solstice, we’re asked to honor what is ripening in our lives. To recognize every fruit of our labor. And tend to the relationships, projects, and pastimes that bring us joy.

How to work with the June Solstice

This year, the June Solstice occurs on June 21st, 2026 — and we want you to be able to make the most of this moment. Here are a few rituals to get you started.

  • Recommit to your resolutions. Return to the intentions you set around the December Solstice or the beginning of the year and check in on how things are going. Reflect on what progress you’ve made. Pinpoint which plans (or expectations) need adjusting. And make a new commitment for the season.
  • Go foraging. Gather flowers, plants, fruits, leaves, pine cones, or other plants that are native to the area you live in — bonus points if they represent the new season. Then place them on your altar or somewhere in your home to honor all that you’re calling into your life. (For additional altar suggestions for the June Solstice, click here.)
  • Welcome sunlight into your home. Open all of your blinds and windows and decorate your space with fresh flowers or foliage for an energizing reset. Not only does the Sun invigorate us and lift our spirits, but it’s a natural disinfectant. Letting the daylight in can be a zero-lift way to cleanse your space.
  • Invite people over. Gather with the folks who light you up. Share food, pour libations (that’s witch-speak for “drinks”), play games, and swap stories about what this time of year reminds you of.
  • Turn care into a ritual. Make a conscious choice to nurture a project, relationship, or person in your life, then create a plan for how you can follow through on that commitment. Remember: The June Solstice marks the beginning of Cancer season, which is all about collective care and tending to things from the ground up.
  • Meditate on the energies of the season. If you need some inspiration, check out our guided meditations on Connection, Spaciousness, and Wholeness in the Listen tab of the CHANI app. Anything that nurtures or lifts others up is supported by the natural world — and the cosmos — now.
