Are your problematic faves working with astrology?

If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance that you check your horoscope or look at the astrological forecast before making any big plans. But have you ever wondered if artists are doing it too?

The art of choosing lucky dates is a whole branch of astrology, and cultural leaders have consulted astrologers since ancient times — so it would make sense if present-day celebrities are working with astrology to time their major moves and mic-drop moments. We’ve looked at the biggest announcements and releases over the past few years, and the astro definitely checks out. So is your favorite art laced with extra cosmic support, or is the sky just doing what it does best, mirroring what’s happening here on Earth? You be the judge.

Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia and Radical Optimism: Jupiter conjunctions

Dua Lipa is one of the two artists on this list who has spoken publicly about working with an astrologer named Rosie. But Lipa has said in interviews that she consults Rosie more as a therapist than as a strategic date planner. Still, if we take a look at some of Dua Lipa’s biggest releases, they do seem astrologically guided.

Dua Lipa’s second studio album, Future Nostalgia, came out on March 27th, 2020. While you may remember that as the month the world shut down, the astrology of that particular day was hard to beat. To start, five out of the seven traditional planets were in “dignified” signs — either their home signs or their signs of exaltation. That was the first hint that things were likely to go well. Jupiter (the planet of growth) and Pluto (the planet of power) were also conjunct in ambitious Capricorn, which isn’t exactly a transit we would choose for an album release (Jupiter is in its fall in Capricorn, and with Pluto in the mix, this combo has big banker energy). But it’s certainly a signature of success. Venus, the planet of beauty, was at home in Taurus, where it was trining Jupiter, creating one of the best setups you can ask for. And the Moon was exalted in Taurus, approaching a sextile to dreamy Neptune. Despite the global pandemic changing life as we knew it, Future Nostalgia was a hit, receiving universal acclaim from critics, topping the charts in multiple countries, and winning the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album. And if this date was elected, Dua Lipa, we see you.

Dua Lipa’s next studio album was Radical Optimism, which came out on May 3rd, 2024 — soon after the rare conjunction between Jupiter and Uranus in Taurus on April 20th. Jupiter is known for its optimism, while Uranus is famously radical, so the album title reflected this astro so literally it had to be planned. Or so we think.

SZA’s “I Hate U” and SOS: Full Moons and Jupiter

The other artist who publicly talks about working with an astrologer is SZA, who shared in a tweet that she released her singles “Joni,” “I Hate U,” and “Nightbird” when her astrologer said so. It was August 22nd, 2021, when the Sun was at the very end of Leo, conjunct the fixed star Regulus, which is all about fame and reputation. And the Full Moon was at the end of Aquarius, conjunct Jupiter, the planet of plenty. Not a bad day to make sure your music gets noticed — and so it did. “I Hate U” immediately went viral on TikTok, prompting SZA to release it officially in December of that year, when it reached number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned a 4x Platinum certification in the US.

SZA’s second studio album, SOS, came out on December 9th, 2022, when Venus in Sagittarius was exactly squaring Jupiter in Pisces, where the planet of abundance is at home. Because Jupiter also rules Sagittarius, this is one of the best setups for Venus, which is being “received” by its sign’s ruler — kind of like getting invited by the cool kid to the pool party. What’s more, the still-full Moon had just entered Cancer, its home sign, ensuring this album would find success. In the end, SOS became the first album by a woman to spend 100 weeks on the Billboard 200’s top 10, became the longest-running top-10 album by a Black artist in the US, received nine Grammy nominations, and won the Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album. It’s also been the most Platinum-certified album by a Black woman artist since 2000. If SOS was timed astrologically, that was definitely a win.

Beyoncé’s Renaissance and Cowboy Carter: Fire trines

When Beyoncé released Renaissance on July 29th, 2022, it was clear that the album was the first of a trilogy. Launched the day after a New Moon, while the Sun and Moon were still in Leo, Renaissance paid tribute to Black queer club culture and celebrated Leo-coded themes like self-love, performance, and freedom of expression.

Then Cowboy Carter came out on March 29th, 2024 — during Aries season, when the Sun was in another fire sign (and we now know Bey’s ascendant is at 29º Aries, since she recently revealed her birth certificate). The Sun rules Leo and is exalted in Aries, so these are the two best signs for the luminary to pass through, giving anything released in these seasons a boost of honor and attention. As an Aries rising, Beyoncé was also spotlit during the Cowboy Carter launch, when the Sun — the largest “spotlight” in the solar system — was highlighting her 1st House of self, which helped her dominate headlines and break several chart records. To top it all off, March 29th featured a fiery Moon in Sagittarius — and if you ask us which sign is most likely to wear cowboy boots with spurs, it’s probably the archer of the zodiac. Sounds pretty intentional to us astrologers.

The timing of these two albums has led fans to wonder whether “Act III” will come out during Sagittarius season, completing a fire-sign trio. If Beyoncé were to release “Act III” on November 29th, 2026 (she seems to like the number 29), the Sun would be in Sagittarius and the Moon would be right next to abundant Jupiter in Leo. That’s a Sunday, and most big album releases happen on Fridays — but maybe news will drop around this date, so stay tuned.

Greta Gerwig's Barbie: Venus retrograde in Leo

Remember the summer of 2023, when pop culture was incredibly Venus-in-Leo-coded? This was the season when female artists (represented by Venus) were overshadowing everyone else in music, film, and entertainment (as Leo is all about performance). One of the biggest box-office hits of the year — Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig — came out in theaters on July 21st, one day before Venus stationed retrograde in Leo. This fixed fire sign is all about glamour, Venus is all about beauty and aesthetics, and Venus retrogrades are all about looking back over something — such as, say, the history of a doll that’s left a mark on generations of girls since the 1950s — so Barbie reflected this astrology in a very literal way. (So did the cast, especially Margot Robbie, who wore custom-made, Barbie-inspired outfits throughout the movie’s press tour.)

Venus in Leo knows how to hold attention, and by the time Venus met up with the Sun in a particularly radiant Leo cazimi on August 13th, Barbie was still the number one film at the box office, four weeks into its run. While we wouldn’t normally recommend major releases during retrograde seasons, this one clearly matched Barbie’s subject matter and tapped into something audiences were craving at the time, making it a blockbuster we couldn’t stop talking about.

Charli xcx’s Brat: Gemini stellium and major cazimis

Charli xcx released her album Brat on June 7th, 2024, when five of the seven traditional planets were in Gemini — arguably the brattiest sign of the zodiac, since Geminis are known for their trickster energy. This was also a day when the Venus cazimi was still in effect (the exact date was three days earlier, on June 4th). Cazimis are some of the most potent dates in a planet’s cycle, and a Venus cazimi is all about redefining beauty, art, and femininity — which is what Brat went on to do.

If Charli xcx wasn’t working with an astrologer, someone on her team must have killer instincts, because the album was first announced on February 28th. This was the day when both Mercury and Saturn were conjunct the Sun, forming — yes — another cazimi. With both the planet of communication and the planet of structure involved, this one was a double hitter — a moment when messages were more likely to go viral and any commitments made were sure to be solid. Charli xcx was also born during a Mercury cazimi, which doesn’t necessarily make this transit more meaningful for her, but it does suggest that she naturally possesses the spark of cleverness and playfulness that her music has become known for.

Kate Nash’s “GERM”: Mercury cazimi in Gemini

Kate Nash released her song “GERM” on May 29th, 2025, and she was trending online within hours. On this date, Mercury was forming an exact conjunction with the Sun, also known as a cazimi — one of the luckiest, most clarifying points in the messenger planet’s cycle. This cazimi was extra potent because it happened in one of Mercury’s home signs, Gemini. Given that Mercury is all about words and ideas, this was the perfect date to put out a song that not only coins a new term but makes sharp points backed up by hard facts — a very Gemini flex.

The title of the song is an acronym for “girl,” “exclusionary,” “regressive,” and “misogynist” — Nash’s rebranding of TERFs (trans-exclusionary radical feminists) such as J. K. Rowling — and the song provoked strong reactions amid recent “debates” over the legal rights of trans women. Some anti-trans critics claimed that Nash was betraying cis women, while many queer and trans listeners welcomed Nash’s advocacy. Nash went on to perform “GERM” at the 2025 Glastonbury Festival, where she held up signs with the song’s lyrics and criticized Rowling’s transphobia during her set, which drew cheers from many of the 210,000 attendees and made international headlines. Remember: Mercury cazimis act like cosmic megaphones that carry messages far and wide. So it’s a pretty powerful moment to choose for a mic-drop release like “GERM.”

Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl: Venus conjunct Jupiter

On August 11th, 2025, the New Heights podcast (hosted by Taylor Swift’s fiancé, Travis Kelce) posted a thumbnail of their next episode, featuring the pop star’s silhouette. Then Swift’s marketing team shared a carousel of 12 photos of Taylor in orange outfits from the Eras Tour, with the caption: “Thinking about when she said, ‘See you next era.’” A countdown also appeared on Taylor’s website, ending at 12:12 am on August 12th — the exact moment she announced the title of her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, which was released on October 3rd.

In case you don’t remember, the two days when the album was being teased coincided with the best astrology of the year, when Venus was approaching a rare conjunction with Jupiter in Cancer. Venus is the planet of love, beauty, art, and… well, showgirls. Meanwhile, Jupiter is the planet of generosity and wisdom. When they meet up, it’s the luckiest, most gift-giving astro you can dream of — the perfect time to share something major.

On top of that — this one’s for the astro nerds — Jupiter was at its exaltation degree during this announcement, so the planet was operating at the peak of its powers. With this timing, the album announcement was going to attract major attention — and pre-sales. The countdown generated so much excitement that it apparently “broke the internet,” or at least crashed Taylor’s website. And guess who has Jupiter in Cancer in her birth chart? Taylor. So this 12th album will be released during the soon-to-be-36-year-old billionaire’s Jupiter return, which happens once every 12 years. Jupiter in Cancer is good for everyone, but it’s extra abundant for people who are now in their Jupiter return, since this transit is activating a powerful placement in their birth charts. So it makes sense that Taylor would choose this year to release her next big era. Even if the album’s reception was hit-and-miss, there’s no denying it was a massive commercial success.

Coincidence, fate, or good planning?

So have these artists been strategically using astrology, or did their schedules just happen to work out in their favor? We can’t say for sure (except in SZA’s case), but that’s the fun thing about astrology — the sky mirrors what’s happening on Earth, whether you plan it that way or not. (As above, so below, as the saying goes.) But when you time your big projects with intention, as these artists do, you can add a boost of cosmic luck to support you.
